How to apply for the CHST credential

Confirm the education requirement
You need at least a high-school diploma or the equivalent (GED). No degree is required for the CHST — it's designed for practitioners on the construction jobsite.
Confirm your construction safety experience
You need at least 3 years of construction-industry experience where safety and health duties account for at least 35% of your role — jobsite inspections, toolbox talks, PPE programs, hazard control, incident reporting, and safety training.
Create your BCSP account and gather documentation
Register at my.bcsp.org. Prepare an itemized project history (dates, employer, your role, safety duties and % of time), supervisor references for verification, and proof of your education.
Submit the CHST application and pay the fee
Apply online through your BCSP account and pay the application fee. BCSP publishes current CHST application, exam, combo, extension, and renewal fees on the credential page — verify before paying.
Wait for eligibility approval
BCSP reviews your application and may request additional evidence or supervisor verification. Respond promptly. Once approved you'll receive an Authorization to Test with a one-year eligibility window.
Schedule your CHST exam at Pearson VUE
Book a seat at a Pearson VUE test center or an online proctored session within your eligibility window. Reserve early — jobsite-heavy weeks make rescheduling costly.
Prepare with ShiKa Exam Prep
Study by CHST domain: construction hazards (falls, struck-by, caught-in/between, electrical), PPE, jobsite inspections, safety training, emergency response, program implementation, and record-keeping. Run full-length timed mocks and target 75%+ consistently before scheduling.
Sit the CHST exam
The CHST is a 200-question, multiple-choice, computer-based exam delivered in a ~5-hour appointment. Pace yourself at ~90 seconds per question and reserve time to review flagged items.
Maintain your CHST (recertification)
Pay the annual renewal fee and complete BCSP's Recertification (CoC) point requirements every 5 years — safety training, continuing education, professional activities, and an ethics activity — to keep the CHST active.
