How to apply for the CSP credential
A clear roadmap from checking eligibility to sitting the exam and keeping your certification active. Always confirm current fees and requirements onbcsp.org.
Confirm eligibility
You need (a) a bachelor's degree (or higher) in any field, OR an associate degree in safety/health/environment, AND (b) at least 4 years of safety experience where safety is at least 50% of your role — preventative, professional-level, with breadth and depth.
Hold a qualifying BCSP credential (or approved equivalent)
Common paths: hold the Associate Safety Professional (ASP), or a BCSP-approved credential such as GSP, CIH, CMIOSH, CRSP, or SMS. Check the current list at bcsp.org.
Submit the CSP application
Apply online through your BCSP account. Provide degree transcripts, detailed job history, and the qualifying credential. Pay the application fee (currently USD 160).
Wait for eligibility decision
BCSP reviews your application in a few weeks. If additional documentation is requested, respond promptly to keep your file active.
Schedule your CSP exam
Once approved, pay the exam fee (currently USD 510) and schedule at a Pearson VUE test center or online proctored session. You get a one-year eligibility window.
Prepare with Shi-Ka Exam Prep
Work through practice mode across all 7 domains, then attempt at least 3 full-length timed mocks per domain. Aim for consistent 75%+ mock scores before scheduling.
Sit the exam
The CSP is a 200-question, multiple-choice, computer-based exam with a 5.5-hour window. Manage time to about 90 seconds per question with a review pass at the end.
Maintain your CSP
After passing, pay the annual renewal fee and complete the Recertification (CoC) point requirements every 5 years to keep the credential active.
